Cuando vives en una comunidad donde la violencia, tener varias mujeres y gastar todo tu dinero en alcohol y malos vicios es una conducta normalizada y aceptada para todos, siempre existe un camino diferente.
Ser joven y vivir en un batey tiene varios caminos a elegir.
El primer camino lo llamaremos: El camino de todos, el cual todas las personas transitan, que es el más cómodo y normalizado por la sociedad. Es un círculo vicioso, donde lo predominante es la violencia, la cual viene siempre acompañada del machismo, tener varias mujeres en diferentes comunidades, quedar embarazada o embarazar a una adolescente a temprana edad y malgastar tu salario de un mes en una noche.
El resultado de este camino siempre será el mismo. Vivirás toda la vida anhelando haber actuado diferente, queriendo tener lo que otros tienen, queriendo vivir una vida de apariencias ficticias, las cuales transmites a tus descendientes y los que te rodean.
Todas en realidad son conductas aprendidas y moldeadas por la comunidad donde nos vemos rodeados e involucrados.
El segundo camino lo llamaremos: fuera de lo normal, el camino menos transitado, lleno de oportunidades de desarrollo, de ser un ejemplo de referencia comunitario. Sin embargo, no es para nada fácil llegar al final del camino. Antes, te verás obligado a renunciar a todo el privilegio que todos tienen, el cual todos eligen y nadie está decidido a aparatarse de ellos.
Serás considerado el menos conocido, el más raro, y tendrás que renunciar a ofertas indecorosas. Serás quien invierte tiempo y dinero en estudios y formación que aparentemente, se dice, no servirán para nada; harás lo más importante mientras dejarás lo que te divierte.
Te digo que esto solo se logra cuando te asocias o te agrupas con personas que transitan por ese mismo camino llamado fuera de lo normal, y notas que su final es diferente. Estas personas piensan diferente, actúan diferente y sus frutos y cosechas dan para todos de los cuales se rodean. Con más oportunidades de desarrollo, vivirás cómo quieres y no cómo quiere la sociedad. Esto será más duradero que los frutos de aquellos jóvenes que transitan el camino llamado el camino de todos.

Miguel Ángel Smera Mercedes es originario de Monte Coca en la provincia de San Pedro de Macorís en la República Dominicana. Se graduó de la Universidad Nacional Evangélica donde estudió educación en ciencias sociales en 2019. A partir de los 15 años, comenzó a dar charlas sobre educación sexual, liderazgo y desarrollo comunitario, ITS, VIH/SIDA, prevención del embarazo adolescente y la salud sexual y reproductiva. Con el objetivo de incrementar sus conocimientos en estas materias, recibió un certificado de la Universidad Agroforestal Fernando Arturo de Meriño de Jarabacoa. Miguel Ángel ha sido un líder comunitario encargado de difundir información para diversos programas de educación sexual y liderazgo juvenil, como Escojo mi Vida, Peace Corps Supermen, la organización COPRESIDA y DPV.
Miguel Ángel ha sido entrenador y coordinador regional de DPV en las provincias de Hato Mayor y San Pedro de Macorís. También, se desempeñó como maestro suplente en ciencias sociales en la Escuela Básica Monte Coca durante un año. Miguel Ángel ha estado con DREAM Project como voluntario desde 2010 y, en 2019, fue contratado por DREAM como Coordinador del programa Luchadores por el Cambio en la Costa Norte. En 2021, fue ascendido a Coordinador del programa DP y supervisa tanto a Luchadores por el Cambio como a Única.

When you live in a community where violence, being with several women and spending all your money on alcohol and bad vices is normalized and accepted behavior for everyone, there is always a different path.
Being young and living in a batey offers several paths to choose from.
We will call the first path: everyone's path, which all people travel, which is the most comfortable and normalized by society. It is a vicious circle, where violence is predominant, which is always accompanied by machismo, having several women in different communities, becoming pregnant or getting a teenager pregnant at an early age and wasting your salary for a month in one night.
The result of this path will always be the same. You will live your whole life yearning to have acted differently, wanting to have what others have, wanting to live a life of false appearances, which you transmit to your descendants and those around you.
All are behaviors learned and shaped by the community that surrounds us and in which we are involved.
We will call the second path: out of the ordinary, the path less traveled, full of development opportunities, of being a role model for the community. However, it is not at all easy to get to the end of the road. Prior to doing so, you will be forced to give up the life that everyone has, which everyone chooses and no one is determined to get away from.
You will be considered the least known, the strangest, and you will have to turn away unseemly offers. You will be the one who invests time and money in studies and training that apparently, they say, will not be of any use; you will do what is most important while leaving behind what amuses you.
I tell you that this path is only achieved when you associate with people who walk that same out of the ordinary path, and you notice that their end is different. These people think differently, act differently and the fruits of their labor benefit all who surround them. With more development opportunities, you will live how you want and not how society wants. This will last longer than the fruits of those young people who walk everyone’s path.

Miguel Ángel Smera Mercedes is a native of Monte Coca in the San Pedro de Macorís province in the Dominican Republic. He graduated from the National Evangelical University with a major in social sciences education in 2019. From the age of 15, he started giving talks on sexual education, leadership and community development, STIs, HIV/AIDS, prevention of adolescent pregnancy and sexual and reproductive health. With the aim of increasing his knowledge in these subjects, he received a certificate from the Fernando Arturo de Meriño Agroforestry University in Jarabacoa. Miguel Ángel has been a community leader in charge of disseminating information for various sex education and youth leadership programs, such as Escojo mi Vida (I Choose my Life), Peace Corps Supermen, the COPRESIDA organization and DPV.
Miguel Ángel has been a trainer and regional DPV Coordinator in the Hato Mayor and San Pedro de Macorís provinces. He also served as a substitute teacher in social sciences at the Monte Coca Primary School for one year. Miguel Ángel has been with the DREAM Project as a volunteer since 2010 and, in 2019, was hired by DREAM as Coordinator of the Luchadores por el Cambio (Fighters for Change) program on the North Coast. In 2021, he was promoted to Coordinator of the Deportes para la Vida (Sports for Life) program, which oversees both Luchadores por el Cambio and Única.
