Ser profesor/a en DREAM Project | Being a teacher at the DREAM Project

Soy Anis Carrasco, profesora por vocación, licenciada en matemáticas y física. Llegué a la organización en el 2012, y, en ese entonces, tenía 19 años de edad con muchos temores y sueños por lograr en el ámbito profesional.
En estas palabras, les narraré mi historia en DREAM Project desde el 2012 hasta la fecha.
La escuelita de Caraballo, una comunidad rural con una variedad cultural de dominicanos y haitianos, fue mi espacio para iniciar esta gran labor docente. Desde que inicié, estuve trabajando con un profesor líder. Los dos teníamos una entrenadora que fue una maestra excelente, Leah. Ella fue mi mentora y, durante mucho tiempo, me enseñó e instruyó en el ámbito educativo, desde cómo hablar con los estudiantes y el trato y las relaciones de profesores y estudiantes hasta cómo tener una excelente lección de aula. Ella grababa mis clases, una herramienta que me permitía evaluarme como profesora. Para mi, esta fue una de mis mejores experiencias como profesora. En DREAM, el profesor tiene un espacio para aprender, crecer y desarrollarse como profesional.
En otro ámbito, hice el curso de Deportes para la Vida y Única. Estos dos me enseñaron cómo trabajar los temas de sexualidad con nuestros adolescentes, y, por mucho tiempo, desarrollé estos programas. Un profesor en DREAM es como una mariposa: se transforma, cambia.
Después de tres años en ese espacio entregando lo mejor de mí para la comunidad, vengo a Cabarete, donde tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en un espacio en la escuela pública dando reforzamiento a nuestros niños. Mientras hacía eso, cada mes, tuve la oportunidad de tomar un taller de desarrollo profesional para continuar desarrollándome como docente.
En el 2017, soy elegida para ser coordinadora de varios programas en la organización. Aunque ya no estaba en el aula, tenía un labor muy importante que era entrenar a otros jóvenes estudiantes de educación para que ellos, por medio de los talleres que yo les impartía, lograran un cambio distinto en la educación dominicana. Si estar en el aula me encantaba, apoyar a otros profesores me apasionaba. Trabajé desde el manejo de aula, planificación…todo lo que aprendí lo entregué a cada joven que participó en el programa.
En mi desarrollo profesional como coordinadora de varios programas, me involucré en otros ámbitos educativos.
Con el pasar de los años, ya para el 2020, pasé a ser directora de los programas de lectura. La organización vio mi capacidad para desarrollarlos y confió en mis habilidades. Una de las causas para lograr ese excelente trabajo es por el equipo dedicado y entregado que tengo. La comunicación y el trabajo en equipo me han ayudado a continuar alcanzando las metas que me he propuesto en la organización.
Durante el 2020, tuve retos, ya que tenía que adaptarme a los cambios. Tenía un personal muy grande a mi cargo, y tuve el apoyo de la directora ejecutiva para mi desarrollo profesional. DREAM como organización valora el desarrollo profesional de sus empleados: siempre nos especializamos en lo que necesitamos para ser profesores excelentes, lo que ha sido lo más importante para mí.
Ya para el inicio del 2020, llega la pandemia, y, con ella, muchos desafíos: por ejemplo, cierre de programas, nuevas oportunidades y desarrollo y llevar todo al formato virtual. Como profesor de un sistema educativo deficiente, la organización se preocupó y nos permitió que, durante los primeros meses de la pandemia, nos desarrolláramos en el ámbito tecnológico. Un profesor en DREAM conoce las tecnologias de la información y comunicación y sabe usarlas para el excelente manejo de sus instrucciones dentro y fuera del aula.

Un profesor DREAM está enriquecido en valores.
Un profesor DREAM tiene vocación.
Un profesor DREAM es dedicado en su labor.
Un profesor DREAM posee las competencias docentes para llevar a cabo su tarea.
Un profesor DREAM está abierto para aprender nuevas cosas. No se estanca y es moderno.
A un profesor DREAM le gusta la enseñanza y dedica cada minuto de su tiempo a explorar.
Un profesor DREAM tiene un paquete de herramientas y técnicas para implementar en el aula.
Un profesor DREAM maneja las herramientas digitales.
Un profesor DREAM conoce a cada uno de sus estudiantes.
Un profesor DREAM planifica según las necesidades de cada estudiante, no de un grupo.
Un profesor DREAM es un lector: ama la lectura y la comparte.
Un profesor DREAM trabaja en equipo y tiene buena comunicación.
En mi labor como profesora y ahora como directora, he puesto esas características del profesor de DREAM en práctica.

Sobre la autora: Anis Carrasco, Directora de Programas
Anis Carrasco, nacida en Puerto Plata, RD, es una joven dedicada a la docencia. Ha colaborado con los niños de la comunidad que necesitan más ayuda en las habilidades de lectura, y le apasiona la educación. Anis obtuvo una licenciatura en matemáticas, la cual continuó estudiando para completar una maestría. Anis ha trabajado con DREAM Project por casi 10 años en varias posiciones, incluyendo maestra, coordinadora de ferias de libros y entrenadora de futuros docentes. En el último año, ha sido directora de programas de lectura y, actualmente, es directora de programas, supervisando los programas de lectura y desarrollo juvenil.

I am Anis Carrasco, a teacher by vocation, with a degree in mathematics and physics. I came to the organization in 2012, and, at that time, I was 19 years old with many fears and dreams to achieve in the professional field.
In the following blog, I will tell you my story working at the DREAM Project from 2012 to date.
The Caraballo school, a rural community with a cultural variety of Dominicans and Haitians, was the space in which I started this great teaching work. Since I began, I was working with a lead teacher. We both had a coach who was an excellent teacher, Leah. She was my mentor and, for a long time, she taught and instructed me in the educational realm, from how to talk to students and the treatment and relationships of teachers and students to how to have a great classroom lesson. She recorded my classes, a tool that allowed me to evaluate myself as a teacher. For me, this was one of my best experiences as a teacher. In DREAM, a teacher has the space to learn, grow and develop as a professional.
I also participated in programs in other areas, such as the Deportes para la Vida and Única courses. These two taught me how to work on and discuss topics related to sexuality with our teens, and, for a long time, I led the development these programs. A teacher at DREAM is like a butterfly: transforming, changing.
After three years in that space giving the best of myself to the community, I came to Cabarete, where I had the opportunity to work in a space in the public school giving reinforcement to our children. While doing that, every month, I had the opportunity to take a professional development workshop to continue developing myself as a teacher.
In 2017, I was chosen to be the coordinator of several programs in the organization. Although I was no longer in the classroom, I had a very important job, which was to train other young education students so that they, through the workshops that I gave them, could achieve a distinct change in Dominican education. If I loved being in the classroom, I was impassioned by supporting other teachers. I worked from classroom management, planning…everything I learned I gave to each young person who participated in the program.
In my professional development as coordinator of various programs, I became involved in other educational fields.
Over the years, by 2020, I became the director of the reading programs. The organization saw my ability to develop them and trusted my skills. One of the reasons for achieving such excellent work is because of the dedicated team that I have. Communication and teamwork have helped me continue to achieve the goals that I have set for myself in the organization.
During 2020, I had challenges, since I had to adapt to the changes. I had a very large staff in my charge, and I had the support of the executive director for my professional development. DREAM as an organization values the professional development of its employees: we always specialize in what we need to be excellent teachers, which has been the most important thing to me.
By the beginning of 2020, the pandemic arrives, and, with it, many challenges: for example, closing programs, new opportunities and development and bringing everything to virtual format. As educators in a poor educational system, the organization was concerned and allowed us to develop in the technological field during the first months of the pandemic. A teacher at DREAM knows information and communication technologies and knows how to use them for the excellent handling of their curricula inside and outside the classroom.

A DREAM teacher is a reader: he/she loves reading and shares it.
A DREAM teacher works as a team and has good communication.
In my work as a teacher and now as a director, I have put those characteristics of a DREAM teacher into practice.

About the Author: Anis Carrasco, Director of Programs
Anis Carrasco, born in Puerto Plata, DR, is a young woman dedicated to teaching. She has collaborated with children in the community who need extra help with reading skills, and she is passionate about education. Anis earned a degree in mathematics, which she continued to study to complete a Master's. Anis has worked with the DREAM Project for almost 10 years in various positions, including a teacher, book fair coordinator and trainer of future teachers. For the past year, she has been the Director of Reading Programs and, currently, she is the Director of Programs, overseeing the reading and youth development programs.
