The Young Stars At-Risk Youth Program

Estrellas Jovenes (Young Stars) is an extracurricular program that supports students from the local public schools. Students attend the program in morning and afternoon sessions, five days a week. This groundbreaking program will take place in three communities in the 2011-2012 school year, the DFBR Education Center in Colonia Nueva, the Caraballo Community Center and the new Abreu Public School Library. The DREAM Young Stars Program consists of literacy and leadership components that tackle the various needs of Dominican youth.

Young Stars at the DREAM Center, Cabarete

Locations: The DFBR Education Center, Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Number of children participating in 2011-12: 140 students ages 8-14

DREAM Staff: 1 Youth Director, 4 DREAM volunteers

The Young Stars Program at the DREAM Center was our pioneer program which started in 2008 as a model for Extended Day Programs that can be replicated throughout the Dominican Republic. Young Stars creatively teaches reading, writing and mathematics, touching on the multiple ways that children learn.  Projects that focus on critical thinking and group work are the cornerstone of the program. The DREAM Public Library supports these classes with age appropriate reading and the computer room provides innovative software and access to the internet.

Young Stars Caraballo Program

Locations: The Caraballo Community Center, Batey Caraballo, Dominican Republic

Number of children participating: 40 students ages 7-14

DREAM Staff: 1 Youth Director, 1 DREAM volunteer

Important Donors: USAID and Centro Franklin

The Caraballo Mini-Young Stars Program is supported by a public library that provides literacy and math materials to engage the students as thoughtful learners. In addition, Sports and Deportes para la Vida classes support healthy decision making and team work in a community that has very few options for enrichment of its youth.

DREAM Playa Grande Foundation Young Stars Program and Library

Location: Abreu Public School, Abreu, Dominican Republic

DREAM Staff: 1 local librarian, 1 Peace Corps Volunteer

Important Donors: Playa Grande Foundation fully supports the Abreu Program

The DREAM Library and Young Stars Program in the Abreu Public School is a unique model that DREAM hopes to replicate in other public schools around the country. The synergy between supporting literacy in the public schools and providing enrichment opportunities such as book clubs, translates a strengthened public school system as well as youth prepared for higher learning.
