The DREAM Guzmán Ariza Summer School & Camp is a 4-week educational summer program for at-risk youth, and a Teacher Training Program. The day camp gives children the chance to go on field trips outside their local community and provides the educational support needed to reverse the trend of increasing dropout rates and risky behavior. The program offers core subjects such as reading, writing, English and math, all intertwined with more traditional camp-related activities like swimming, art, sports, music and dance. We also offer sexual awareness and health programming through the help of trained counselors from Deportes para la Vida. International volunteers, including students from Santo Domingo, support the camp through service learning as counselors in the camp. In addition, these volunteers provide much needed materials and monetary support. International experts in literacy and math donate their summer vacations to work closely with the local Dominican public school teachers in a Teacher Training Program. Sixteen local teachers are trained in student-centered strategies in reading, writing and math that they take back to the public schools at the end of the summer.
